Articulation Carryover Strategy Checklist
Carryover — using a newly learned speech sound correctly in everyday conversation — is often the most challenging phase of articulation therapy. SLPs commonly report that students can produce target sounds accurately in the therapy room but struggle to maintain that accuracy at home, school, and in the community. This checklist helps families and SLPs systematically track carryover across real-world contexts.
What This Checklist Covers
The carryover strategy checklist is a one-page printable PDF organized into four sections:
Settings
Checkboxes for tracking where your child practices their target sound in natural speech:
- Home
- School or classroom
- Playground or recess
- Community outings (grocery store, restaurants)
- Car rides
Conversation Partners
Checkboxes for tracking who your child practices with:
- Parent or caregiver
- Sibling
- Teacher or classroom aide
- Peers and friends
- Other family members or unfamiliar adults
Strategies to Try
A numbered list (1-10) with space to write specific strategies recommended by your SLP. Common strategies include verbal reminders, signal systems (a gentle tap), reading aloud time, and structured conversation games.
Weekly Progress
A simple five-day tracking row where caregivers rate daily carryover on a scale (e.g., rarely, sometimes, often, consistently) to identify trends over time.
How to Use This Checklist
Print the checklist and review it with your SLP at the start of the carryover phase. Together, identify which settings, partners, and strategies to prioritize first. Check off items as your child demonstrates accurate sound production in each context. Bring the completed checklist to therapy sessions so your SLP can celebrate progress and adjust the plan. Print a fresh copy every few weeks as your child expands to new settings and partners.
