Following 1-Step Directions Worksheet

Strengthening Receptive Language with 1-Step Directions
Following directions is a core receptive language skill that affects academic performance, social interactions, and daily routines. Students who struggle with following directions may have difficulty in the classroom, during transitions, and in group activities. Targeted practice with clear, single-step commands builds the foundation for more complex multi-step directions.
This worksheet provides 100 open-ended 1-step direction prompts. Each prompt gives the student one clear action to perform, such as “Touch your nose” or “Clap your hands.” The open-ended format allows the SLP to observe the student’s response and provide immediate feedback on comprehension and execution.
How to Use This Worksheet in Therapy
Print the worksheet and work through the directions during a therapy session. Read each direction aloud and give the student a few seconds to respond. For students who need visual support, pair each direction with a gesture or demonstration. Track which directions the student follows correctly on the first attempt, and revisit challenging items in subsequent sessions. This worksheet also makes excellent homework — parents can work through 10-15 items per day to reinforce skills practiced in therapy.
