Practicing the R Sound
The R sound (or /r/ phoneme) is one of the most challenging articulation targets in speech therapy. Many children continue working on /r/ well into elementary school, and consistent practice with structured prompts accelerates progress. Research supports using word-level drills before progressing to sentences and conversation for lasting carryover.
This worksheet provides 87 open-ended prompts featuring words with the R sound. Each prompt presents a target word for the student to say aloud, repeat in isolation, or use in a sentence as directed by their speech-language pathologist.
How to Use This Worksheet
Print the worksheet and work through the prompts during therapy sessions or as homework. For each target word, have the student say the word three times clearly, then use it in a short sentence. Focus on tongue placement — the tongue tip should curl slightly upward and back without touching the roof of the mouth. Common cues SLPs use include “bunched tongue” and “retroflex tongue.” Track progress by marking each word as mastered or needing additional practice, and revisit challenging items in future sessions.
Tips for Parents
If you are using this worksheet for home practice, keep sessions short (5-10 minutes) and positive. Praise effort over accuracy, and avoid correcting every production. Focus on 5-10 words per session rather than rushing through the full list. Pair practice with a favorite activity to keep your child engaged.
