Building Vocabulary Through Categorization
Categorization is one of the most effective strategies for building strong vocabulary networks. When children learn to sort words into categories, they create organized mental pathways that support both word learning and word retrieval. Research consistently shows that children with strong categorization skills learn new vocabulary faster and retrieve known words more fluently during conversation.
This worksheet provides structured categorization activities designed for SLP therapy sessions and homework practice. Students sort common words into categories including food, animals, clothing, vehicles, and household items. Each section progresses from basic sorting (placing items into a given category) to more advanced tasks (naming the category when given a group of items, identifying the item that does not belong, and generating additional category members).
How to Use This Worksheet
In Therapy Sessions
Print the worksheet and work through one category section per session. Start by naming the category and asking the student to predict which items might belong. Then present the word cards and have the student sort them, explaining their reasoning for each placement. Use incorrect sorts as teaching opportunities to discuss shared attributes and category boundaries.
For Homework
Send the worksheet home with instructions for caregivers. Suggest completing one section per day, spending 5 to 10 minutes on the activity. Encourage caregivers to extend the activity by asking the child to find real objects around the house that belong to each category. This bridges the worksheet practice to real-world vocabulary use.
Extending the Activity
For students who complete the basic sorting quickly, challenge them to generate subcategories (fruits vs. vegetables within the food category), explain why an item belongs to a category using descriptive language, or think of items that could belong to two categories (a toy car is both a toy and a vehicle). These extensions build the flexible semantic thinking that supports academic vocabulary.
